Responsible betting and protection of minors

Betting carries risks: debt, isolation, addiction. This page brings together the guidance, the player protection tools and the support contacts available in France.

18+ Strictly forbidden to minors. No operator licensed in France may open an account for anyone under 18, including with an adult’s permission. Free, anonymous and confidential support: 09 74 75 13 13, seven days a week from 8am to 2am.

Four simple rules

Set a budget before, never during

Decide on an amount you could lose in full without it affecting your day-to-day budget. Set it before you open your account, and never revise it in the heat of the moment after a loss.

Never chase a loss

Chasing losses is the most common warning sign. A loss is final: raising your stake to wipe it out only raises the risk.

Limit time, not just money

Set a maximum session length and schedule an alert. Time spent is as reliable a warning indicator as the amount staked.

Never borrow to bet

No bet should be funded by credit, an overdraft or money from someone close to you. If that is already happening, stop and contact a support service straight away.

Warning signs

  • You bet larger amounts to feel the same intensity.
  • You hide your stakes or your losses from those around you.
  • You feel irritable or anxious when you cannot bet.
  • You neglect work, studies or close relationships.
  • You borrow, sell or dip into savings to keep going.
  • You have already promised yourself you would stop, without managing it.

A single one of these signs justifies a break and a conversation with a professional. These services are free, anonymous and non-judgemental.

The tools available on every licensed account

French regulation requires every licensed operator to make the following available free of charge, from the account holder’s own account area:

  • Deposit limits — a daily, weekly or monthly cap. A reduction takes effect immediately; an increase is subject to a cooling-off period.
  • Stake limits — a cap on amounts staked over a given period.
  • Temporary suspension — pausing the account for a period you choose, without closing it for good.
  • Self-exclusion — closing off access with the operator concerned.
  • Full history — a dated statement of deposits, stakes and withdrawals, available at any time.

Voluntary self-exclusion through the ANJ

The most protective measure is voluntary self-exclusion, requested directly from the Autorité Nationale des Jeux. It is free, applies to every operator licensed in France as well as to casinos and gaming clubs, and runs for a minimum of three years, renewed automatically. You can apply online or by post to the ANJ.

Protecting a minor. If a minor has access to your device, switch on parental controls and lock the apps concerned. Free options exist on all the main operating systems and through your internet provider.
